Regulations in several countries mandate that drinking water that comes from a surface source like a river, lake, or uncovered reservoir. These regulations create guidelines for treatment and removal of pathogens that are resistant to chlorine, the most commonly used disinfectant for surface drinking water. Canada has put in place certain guidelines for management of Canadian drinking water, which lays down compliance parameters for technologies and methods to be used when treating surface water.
